Account book of William Aitchison and James Parker [manuscript], 1763-1804.

Account book documents the businesses and social life of the partners. Clients noted include Albert Nesbitt, consul general in the Canary Islands; William MacCormick & Company, North Carolina merchants; Virginia governor Francis Fauquier and Williamsburg merchant John Lidderdale. Many business accounts concern ships, crews, and cargoes, tavern expenses and art purchases and note dealings with merchants in the Canary Islands and Cuba. Of interest are accounts of expenses for the return of two runaway slaves, and the purchase of a 35 year old "cleanly, good tempered" woman; a note on the Dismal Swamp including a legend concerning a runaway slave who lived there for 13 years; and a note on 200 Palantines who froze to death in one night on the Capes. The volume also contains medicinal recipes from the books of Dr. Boerhaave; Parker's notes, 1766, on plantings and garden arrangements around his Norfolk, Va., home; and an 1804 account of attempts to collect on long overdue debts for their North Carolina business partner William McCormick & company.
